drivers door pillar - number might also be stamped on the drivers frame rail near the steering box - but the vin won't tell you if it was a Cameo, they didn't have a special indicator in the number

I don't even see a recessed area for the little vin plate? Did a 55 not have one?
Thanks

Don't remember if the plate area was recessed, but there should be at least a couple of rivet holes where the ID plate used to be. It's easy to build up a fake Cameo; all that's necessary is the fiberglass bedsides, a big-window cab, and some creative tinkering with sheet metal. I had a friend in the body shop business in California who built one that would pass all but a really detailed inspection. From 25 feet away, it looked like the real thing.

Well I have a real one, but I'm looking for the vin plate?

Look for a small stainless plate spot welded to the upper door pillar.

Ok lol I found it:) Here is a picture of it. I don't know if it tells anyone anything? I just wanted to make sure it was on there.

Here is a picture of the partial vin on the motor. I was told it was the original motor, but after looking at it I'm pretty sure it's not.

can't say what the engine # means, but the truck didn't come with a V8 because there's no leading V on the vin
H255L = [6 cyl equipped] 1/2 ton, 2nd series, 1955, from the Los Angeles plant - the 7,998th one made there as numbering started at 001001

Thanks for the information. I am not really concerned about it not being a V-8 as it will be totally made into a driver truck for my wife.

According to an old Chilton repair manual I have, a "D" suffix on a V-8 engine number indicates a 1958-63 283 cubic inch engine.
