Anyone replaced thier OEM vacuum wiper motor with a 6-volt electric one? Any advice on where you got it and any helpful hints?

If you have an original 1954 radio, most after-market 6v radios will not fit due to the location of the original radio's speaker (on top of the radio).

Tim, would this apply to a 49 also? I have just installed a replacement electric wiper motor. Weeds

The 47-53 radio did not have the speaker mounted on the top of the radio, so there is most likely no problem installing an electric conversion wiper motor.

Still, it would be nice to hear from someone with first-hand experience.

[raises hand]

I've done it.

Unfortunately, My truck is a '46 and my experiences won't be relevant to your case as my wiper motors live above the windshield.

It was interesting getting the old unit out, but it went together pretty easily. The wiring is an interesting prospect, especially since the windshield is tarred shut. eek

B,
I have considered changing my 4t6 wipers to electric. My truck is pretty much apart and is nearing the wiring stage. What motors did you use? Operate on one switch? Two? Have seen small electric motors on Ebay from a firm I believe called Robotics that may work. Pretty dumbfounded when it comes to electrical, done a lot of reading, so I'll need all the help I can get. Thanks prior

I used a 6/12-volt motor from LMC when I was still 6-volts. It was 2-speed but there wasn't much difference between the speeds, both fairly slow but OK.

After I converted to 12-volts, it went really fast, banged the blades around and the shaft slipped on the collar. After I got that repositioned, I installed the heavy duty resistor. The 2 speeds are still fairly close to one another but the speeds are faster than with 6-volt and no resistor.

Dan:

I have the ones from Jim Carter's. I only have one in (no hole on the passenger side yet) and don't have the wiring quite figured out; I just tested them with lines to the battery. (I had the floorboards out at the time)

The units themselves have a single On/Off switch. Not very high tech, but workable with the right accesories.

Here's my tentative plan:

I'm thinking I'll bring a wire up from the keyswitch to the motor. One of those heavy duty heater switches will be mounted in the blank baffle in the space next to the wiper motor (the electric unit is much smaller than the vacuum unit), and that switch will control the wipers. It's a rheostat with an off function... And with the switch opened all the way up there's no resistance -- so it'll be just like the switch isn't there.

The motors themselves will remain "on" all of the time.

There may also be a relay involved, but I haven't decided if I can part with the money for one as the 6v models are exorbitantly priced. Of course, if I can get a volume discount, maybe I'll get a 5 pack and then do the headlights and the horn then, too. grin

Thanks all for the ideas! Would like to get seat and headliner in soon as wifey has some winter time available to redo. I guess I'll have to really get busy after the holidays if I ever intend to be "finished " by spring. I didn't say which spring.........Enjoy your Holidays!
