I have a 55 2nd series pickup with a 235 in it. Everything seems to be original. When I bought the truck, it had not run in 2 years, so I drained the oil, pulled the plugs, put some oil in the cylinders, turned it over a couple of times, put the plugs back in and I have it running. My question is: It is smoking pretty bad, but seems to quit after it warms up a little until I give it lots of rpm's. I have not put 3 miles on it since I have started working on it. Will the rings re-seal (if that is the problem) or should I go ahead and plan on rebuilding it. The previous owner said that before, he was driving it and it was not burning any oil. Also my neighbor has a 235 out of a 66 that needs to be rebuilt. My 235 does not have an oil filter assy on it and his does. Should I just rebuild his (I can have it, no $$ ) and use it?

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks.

Jeff

if there's a problem it's more likely valve seals, but after you've put oil in the cylinders it can take a fair while at high rpm's to get it all cleaned out - check if compression is decent, and is even on all cylinders - oil filter not too important - nice, but your's made it 50 years w/o one grin

if yer gonna rebuild, may as well take the freebie and start w/ that so the truck still moves til the engine's ready - if you plan on having the truck for the forseeable future, scoop that free core anyway for a spare - they're not makin'em anymore!!

Ditto on Red's comments! There's nothing like a spare engine sitting around. If the original engine doesn't clear up soon, just keep adding a little oil, and do a number on the neighborhood mosquitoes. I'm betting on the rings re-seating after a few more miles, though.

There is no such thing as a 66 235. If you are being offered a 66 230 or 250, it will not just bolt in, not by a mile.

You might try some type of additive to see if there is a stuck oil rail that wil loosen up.

I assumed it was a 235. All I know is that is was a 6 cyl.

Thanks everyone for the information.

What ever it is, there is an easy way to determine if the rings are shot. Do a compression test on each cylinder twice. Once with a good squirt of oil in the cylinder. If the compression increases dramatically after you add the oil, it's time for a rebuild.
