I would like to install a 292 in an 87 pick up 4X4. I noticed that the 292 motor mount has a different location on the passenger side as they are offset from a 250. Mine is the last of the square pick ups and I love it. I wanted to install a 292 but the motor mount bracket that goes to the frame is in the wrong place. Can it be moved to the corect position and then installed? Or is it a forget it and install a 327 ordeal? I have a 250 in it with the WRONG cam and its under powered and chews almost as much gas as a 454. Black tailpipe and sooty plugs. The machine shop admitted the mistake and has a stock cam for it which I was told would make a big difference in the way it would run. I sold this engine to a friends son for his rig which I have to pull in about a week or so. I figured a 292 with propane 9.0:1 pistons and headwork, headers and two singles would do the trick. Thats why the swap. I know the bracket to the frame un bolts. Then what? Do I need to do some cutting or welding? Can a 250 with headwork, headers, SMALL cam and two single carbs work well in this full size 8' rig or is it just too small? It has a 700R4 instead of a manual trans. I have 3.73 gears.

The easiest scenario would be to find an engine mounting
crossmember from another 292 equipped 4x4 like this one and put it in your truck.
I believe there are some vendors who sell bolt in side mounts for the 292 as well.

Hey Ghostrider, Thanks for the photo. I know where there are two 2wd ones but none that are 4x4. One is in an 81 crewcab, first one I have seen in a crewcab, and the other is in a 77' p/u. I will go to the junk yard tomorrow and see if its transferable to my rig. I did look at it on Friday but have to look at it again. Otherwise I'm stuck in what to put in my rig. Thanks again. Henry

I have moved motor mount pads both ways, and it's a pretty simple swap. I replaced a 292 in a big step van with a 350 and moved the mount to the rear, which was not a good thing to do. The 6-cylinder had more load pulling torque than the V-8, especially since somebody had installed a cam that was more at home on the drag strip than in a 10,000 lb. GVW truck!

Well, I am going to look under the hood again. The part where the rubber mount goes is bolted to the frame and cross member. There are two bolts that go to front of the mount towards the front of the truck. Two are on the top of the frame and and side towards the tire. Getting it out is not too hard once the engine is pulled. Its trying to mount it forward enough without having to do some grinding or cutting of the front cross piece. The cross member is riveted so to trade that one for a different one is out of the question. I think if I have to grind off or cut a small amount there should not be a problem. If anyone else knows about this type of conversion please post here and I'll appreciate it very much! Its otherwise set up for a inline six. Have a great week! Henry

It seems to me you should be able to move the mount on the frame to line up. If not you could make a bracket to do it.

YEAH!!!! I finally ordered my stovebolt 292! It will have 9.0:1 propane pistons, stock cam for smooth idle and good grunt, 3 angle valve grind with ALL new valve train parts, which should bring it up to 9.25:1, and precisioned balanced to the new harmonic balancer and flex plate.....especially being a long stroked engine. The block, head, crankshaft and connecting rods are magged and shot peened. Also the head will be ported and polished. Will make it breathe much better. Almost like having larger valves. It should run really well. When the extra $$$ come in it will get cast iron headers, probably Langdons and an Offy manifold for two single carbs. Three carbs are not necessary for me. I think two will work just fine and give some extra boost in power yet still get reasonable economy. Already have a brand new high torque starter, MSD ignition, a sbc fan, sbc fan pulley which is a bit smaller so it will turn faster at idle and clutch, V8 3 row high efficiency radiator and all the tin ware and etc. Almost put in a 327, I like them better than a 350, but would have cost more to get the rest of the parts than the six. Besides I like the inline six sound, their simplicity and toughness. Just nothing like a stovebolt inline six. Should be here the end of next week. Then time to install it a couple of days after it arrives. Some time later posi in the rear. Kind of chomping at the bit for it to come in. Chomp, Chomp. Also has a 7/70 or 7/100k warranty. $1952.00 shipped including the $200 core charge since I don't have one to turn in. Not bad with all that done to it. The local shop would have charged me about $1000 more. Forget it! This place have been building engines for 38 years I believe. They ship anywhere in the states. They are on several sites like chevytrucks.org. I'll keep this site informed how things work out. Henry

i don't know about 4x4's or 87 models but on the 63 to 66 you cant just move the 250/ v8 perch foward, the crosmember mounting hole is in the wrong location and it will be at the wrong angle it you try it. the upper bossed on the 292 block are recessed and you can use the 250 motor bracket but will require the spacers to set it at right angle. i know the later model ones are different all round but since the blocks are the same i believe. it may or may not work. mabey the standardized them for later models. glad to see you went with the 292. ever kick around the idea of a smaller 4 barrel carb? hr

You know hoggyrubber, I am still sort of thinking aobut a 390 cfm Holley 4 bbl. They do work well and might be a good way to go. The two single barrel manifold make it easier to hook up the down shift cable on the 700R4 trans and the cable from the accelerator hooks up easier too. I'll have too see what happens when the engine comes in hopefully by the end of next week. Right now I'll use the stock set up till I can get the better carb or carbs for it. Then its time for the install! Can't hardly wait to get it running. Already got all the tin ware. Have to clean them up first and paint them. I got two different style motor mount frame brackets from the wrecking yard so one should be able to fit or maybe a little modification should get it to fit. Or I can take some 1/4 or 5/16 inch steel and fabricate a bracket. I have new rubber motor mounts to use. I'll make it fit somehow. Maybe someday Fenton headers. We'll see how the $$$ come in. I'll be a Stovebolter for sure. BTW, the 87 is the last of the square faced pick ups. Went to the rounded design in 88'. Don't like them as well.
