I'm fixin' to swap three speeds: A long one (Muncie?) to a short one (Saginaw?). Any hints on mating up the linkages?

if its from a 60's truck, i believe that it came originally with a muncie. heres how you can tell............the plate that has the two shifting arms on it bolts onto the tranny with four bolts, the saginaw bolts on with seven. muncie trannies were painted blue...saginaws werent painted. (at least i havent seen one painted) Also, muncies ARE shorter than the saginaws by about 3 inches, someone here told me they are the same length but theyre not, i have both. they share the same bellhousing tho. i hope this helps

I have had many Muncie 3 spd and Saginaw 3 and 4 spds,all the ones I saw are the same length, 21 inches from the front of the case to the end of the tailhousing.
The Saginaw has a fine spline output shaft.

well, i could be wrong about the lengths, but i would sure like to see a pick of both of them to see which one i have in my trucks.

Here's a photo of a few trannys laying in my barn.The one on top is a Saginaw 4 speed,identical to the 3 spd in appearance except for the 3rd shift lever.The bottom tranny is a Muncie 3spd,this particular unit is from a late 50's truck. Some Muncies have a provision for a rear mount as used for cars.
Some trucks used what's called a heavy duty 3 spd,I've never seen one, but I believe they are a Warner unit, maybe a T-85

thanx for the pic, ive never seen a muncie 3 speed like that before. ill have to get a pic of my 64 three speed, looks almost like that muncie, but much shorter. ill get one of my "saginaw" as well, its in a 75 sports van. thanks again, it helped me out at least.

I'm curious mostly about shifting linkages.
I've got a Sag 3 speed in there now, (as of three days ago) and am shifting with a Cheapo brand shifter that came with the trans. I'd like hints on putting everything back on the column, just 'cause I think it looks better.
I've got bits and pieces of a couple of Hursts, and I may just put one back together and go that route.
Incidentally: my new trans, the Sag, allegedly out of a 68 Camaro, is the same length as the stock 63 Muncie, has the same input splines, but fine (28) output splines. I had to junkyard another yoke ($10, $8 for a new U joint.)
