I made a very stupid mistake and now I need help. I have been restoring a 53 GMC 3100 that I recently purchased. I ordered a master cylinder rebuild kit and disassembled the master cylinder before I recieved the new kit. I assumed the kit would come with a new spring so I threw away my old master cylinder spring. Any leads on where I can pick one up? Will local hardware stores carry ones that will work. Man, I feel stupid. I should have known better.

You will need a spring from another master cylinder. The hardware store springs probably will not work right with the pressure valve at the end of the master cylinder. The spring needs to fit just right on the valve to keep a small amount of pressure on the wheel cylinders. Some of the other stove bolters should have extra parts laying around. Before you spend a lot of time looking for parts I would hone and measure your current master cylinder and see if it's worth rebuilding.

Pletch, I have my old rusty master cylinder from my 1950 Chevy 3100.If it works for you, you can have the whole thing or I'll dismantle it and ship you the spring. Let me know.

Pletch,,Just figure it as a lesson learned. Dont toss anything until youre completely done with the project. Even then,,you may want to save the parts so you can help fellow Stovebolters that make the same mistake.
