Can someone enlighten me on the "BASICS" of the Babbet bearing replacement process on the 216 CU. I understand the shim and de-shim process of adjusting the crank/rod clearances. What needs to be done when the babbet is worn beyond the de-shim fix?

Will,

Re-pouring the babbitt is a technical procedure that is (was) usually done by a rebuilder. I think it is beyond the home shop mechanic, and you won't find any automotive machine shop doing it either...it's a specialty.

Reconditioned rods are available from some of the suppliers that cater to our old engines. You send them your cores and some $$$$, they send you some nice new rods.

If the rods are worn out, the crank journals are probably worn too. This might mean a regrind!

This is my take on the situation!

Standard proceedure here is to have the babbit rods machined to take inserts. then the jobs really easy.
Check with someone like Jim Carter or similar supplier for rods already machined if you dont have a good rebuilder locally.

Well, if you're feeling adventurous you might want to pick up this book and try it yourself:

I had my babbitt rods bored to take inserts. The inserts are basically the same as modern bearings with the multiple layers of different metals. The 216 rods are a thin babbitt rod which most shops can't redo. Shops that do old Ford rods will not touch the 216 rod.
