After going back and forth between rebuilding the stock 265 and going for a bigger v-8, I found a '77 Chevy van with a great drivetrain for 350 bucks on CL. It's a 400sbc with a TH 350! Now I need to know a few things about swapping to side mounts and clearances...
I know I want to go with the 3-piece side mount crossmember. I have read here that sliding the whole thing towards the passenger side by about 3/4" allows for more room with headers/ramhorn exhausts near the steering. Is this common to do?
Also, I am a bit nervous about how high or low the engine will sit in the new crossmember. Is one brand better than another? And lastly, anything else I need to know about or keep in mind while attempting this? I have a 70's 12 bolt rear out of a chevy truck that I C-notched on the edges of the mounting pads and redrilled a hole for the pin in the leaf springs to rest in. I can worry about the driveline later... Thanks for any help!
