I was thinking of getting some headers for my 54 (235)and I was wondering what kind of mufflers everyone is running? Right now with the factory manifold I have single glasspack. I was wanting somepinons on what sounds the best-glasspacks,flomasters...etc?

This is so subjective that there is only one right answer; the sound you and you alone like. Otherwise it is a poll and is meaningless unless you happen to agree.

Don't know what sounds best to your ears, but I like Brockman Mellowtone Steelpack mufflers. Either 12" or 17" size.
They let me enjoy the full range of sounds that my dear 235 and 261 make, but without the obnoxious noise and massive dB assault of straight pipes.

Stay away from the new repro Smithys, no matter what you hear.
They are nothing like the originals.
The new ones inner tube diameter is too small and has too many rows of louvers.
They are too restrictive and the dense glass packing gives it a plastic like clapping sound.
Not at all like the original steelpacked smithys growl.

Flowmasters sound too artificial and nothing like a traditional straight 6 to my ears.

You asked for my subjective input - there you have it.

I am using 2 1/4" Corvair turbo mufflers on my GMC 248 with Fenton Headers, it is a mellow sound until you get on the throttle hard then it sounds off but still not real loud. Turbo mufflers are low restriction design and sound cancellation is not excessive.
