iam building a 1966 chevy pu and when we put in the 350 with hei . we went to hook up the wires for the starter and all the plugs had been cut off on the wires from the fire wall so now i have a 5 wires. purple, blue, lite green, dark green, and a wire that has some kind of paper on it thats what it looks like. i think it had a 6 cyc in it before. can some one help me were they all go . and i need to hook up to my hei dist. how would you do that. all the books i have don't show these wire colors thanks jim

I have some diagrams in front of me...for what it's worth here are some wire locations.

These are for the 6 cylinder engine; The light green and dark green go to the thermo (temp) sending unit.

The purple goes to the "S" terminal on the solenoid.

The blue appears to be a 18 gauge (small) that goes to the big BATT lug. This wire is shown on the V-8 diagram, but not on the 6 cylinder schematic?

For the paper covered wire...I don't know what that is! There are two more wires. Both connect to the "R" terminal (bypass) of the solenoid. One is called out as 20 gauge yellow and it goes directly to the coil.

The other wire connected to this same location is described as 20 gauge white/orange/purple. Your truck might use a resistance wire to the coil as opposed to a ballast resistor, I think your paper covered wire is the white/orange/purple resistance wire.

Your new HEI installation will not require any reduced voltage to the distributor, but will want a full voltage supply that is switched ON from the key whenever the engine is running.

I'm not sure which existing wire will satisfy that requirement. A check with a meter would clarify this, but I think more folks will chime in and probably give you the right answer.

Stuart has got it covered. For the HEI I like to tie into the pink wire behind the ignition switch. Get a 12 gauge wire & scrape the insulation off a short area of the pink wire & solder the wire to it to go to the dist. There is a special connector to the bat. term on the dist. Hopfully you got it off the donor car. The 2 green wires are probably for hot & cold warning lights & use a 2 term sending unit. The blue wire will be for oil pressure if it has a light or electric gauge.

Is the resistance wire just the cloth covered wire from the firewall connector or does it go into the cab. If I just replaced the cloth wire with the HEI term will that work.

The risister wire goes from the firewall connecter to the coil but the rest of the wire is not good for HEI. I go to the back of the ign. switch & scrape some insulation off the pink wire. Then solder a 12 gauge wire to it & run it out to the connector on the HEI. The small blue wire is probably for the oil light.

I basically have the same situation , but without the HEI . Can you tell me where all the different colored wires go ?

There should also be a black wire that connects to the same term. as the + battery cable.
