I guess my question is similiar to 49's. I have a 1950 3100 that I plan to use as my daily driver. At the moment, it has a siezed 216 and a 3 speed on the tree. I also plan on taking the truck to the track on the weekends for bracket racing. My initial plan was to run a 350 with 327 heads and a 700R4. I'm not exactly sure that this is going to be able to do what I need it to. Could anyone suggest a good engine/tranny combination? I need to be able to run low 13s. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | I might be confused but why don't you run a 350 with350 heads?

I haven't competed at the strip since 1966. Check this site out for an answer or 10: http://www.clubhotrod.com/

Unfortunately, I have to use a 700R4 for now, but am planning on putting a 4 speed manual in at a later time and date. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | 327 heads doesn't really mean a lot. What valves and combustion chambers do these heads have. From a performance standpoint that's what matters.
If your advisor who says you'll get more with the 327 heads knows their stuff it probably means you have some of the better 327 heads. A lot of 350 heads won't be any better and could be worse. On the other hand some of the later 350 heads would be much better.
What compression ratio are you going to run, what intake system and what cam. Those decisions will make a lot of difference.

The Vortec heads add 40Hp easy on a healthy bottom end with the better designed runners, ports, and chambers.
While you have the trans out, pull the case apart, lose the spacer that is with the clutch/discs, and replace with additional clutch/discs. This will prevent you from burning the clutches.
For drag racing, I have done both manual and auto. Auto is the way to go for consistency.
