I am working on the running boards for my 1940 1/2 ton. I have two small spots that have rusted through the running board and the support channel that runs down the middle of the running board.

I have cut out the offending metal and removed a section of the support channel. What greeted me under the channel is a considerable amount of rust.

I am wondering what people do to get some kind of rust prevention (paint or whatever) into areas that are hard to reach like this one. There seem to be other places like the roll on the top of the bed sides too.

Once these channels are welded on getting anything but water smile into them seems pretty difficult.

Thanks

Sorry - no brilliant ideas on the rust problem. I was very lucky on mine. Good luck on fixing them up - the original ribbed running boards seem to very difficult to find, and haven't come across any reproductions except the smooth look.

Bill,
I used a product called "Right Stuff" bought at Advance that seemed to work well. I haven't put the truck in an outside environment as of yet. I put it in a spray bottle and sprayed away after I cleaned as best I could. I then primered/painted. In the bed rails I've heard of soaking a sock in cleaner/primer/paint and pushing thru or tying on a string/rope and pulling thru. Good luck. Are you ready for old man winter?

Dan,

Thanks. I am not ready for winter. It looks like I better change though. They are predicting snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.
