Installed new pilot bushing(brass)in a '62 235 CI while replacing clutch, pressure plate, TO etc. Drove brass pilot bushing in with big wooden dowel so not to damage. Bushing seems to have deformed at engine end of bushing and transmission shaft did not want to go in easily. Picked up new pilot bushing but did not notice until getting home that this one is steel. Does it make any difference which is used assuming that I lube the steel one, but not the brass type. Thanks

My '55 235 uses a steel pilot bushing and for years now. It replaced another steel one inserted by GM when the engine was built.

By steel one do you mean the one with the rooler brgs. inside?

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

This one is just a bushing, not a bearing. I have seen bearing as well as bushing available for this model. The engine originally had a brass bushing instead of a bearing, so stayed with bushing.

through it in the freezer overnight before you install it. some light heat on end of crankshaft using a heat gun so you don't damage the seal and bushing will slip in easy.

I'll bet it's actually bronze, not brass. Mine had a bronze bushing. I have seen them that have a steel backing, but the actual load surface was bronze.
And the freezer trick works very well. I didn't use any heat, just freezing the bushing, but it worked very well.
