Well I found out the engine does indeed run in my '54 3100. AND, I quickly learned the throttle return spring is missing. I found a tab on the lickage below the carb, but do not see where it would hook to. Anyone know where it may go?

Look straight down from the tab you found, there should be a hole in the casting just above the oil pan.

Ditto, my '38 216 probably isn't exactly the same but mine is on the side of the block below the carb.

I've never seen a hole in the block casting for that. One of my oil pan bolts (directly below the bellcrank) has a small tab with a hole in it and the spring hooks on there. Maybe somebody has a picture of that.

I too have a weird throttle return spring hookup on my 46 that someone incorporated along the way. Can someone help me also? I've put a picture up on Webshots for all to see. I can identify the little tab on the throttle rod, but I don't know where to connect the other end to. There doesn't seem to be an obvious place on the engine block to hook to. Presently you can see where the spring is hooked onto the carb and then hooked on a little post located on the exhaust manifold. I just know this can't be correct. I'm sure it isn't the right spring. I works, however, looks like a Rube Goldburg. Sorry Ruby!

The engine is a 216 with a Carter YF carb.

Also, where would be the best place to purchase the correct throttle return spring?

I can't say for sure if mine is as stock but I think the spring goes from that hole in the tab on the rod down to the oilpan. You can see the spring in this pic but not where the bottom attaches.

There is a little tab on the rod that goes from the bell crank to the carb. I see it in the picture. It sticks out from the rod and has a little hole in it. The throttle spring hooks through the hole in that tab and goes to a similar looking tab that is bolted under the oil pan bolt just below that tab on the rod. If the oil pan tab isn't there, you can make one or go to a wrecking yard and recycle one. If you are going to a wrecking yard, get the spring to. If not, go tho the hardware store and get a spring that will work. It may take a couple of tries to get just the right one. You can also find a throttle return sping at your FLAPS. They can be found on the "Help!" rack.

Mine too has a tab that is held down by the oil pan bolt. I'm very convenent it's origional on my 53 3100 216

You guys are awesome!! Now that makes total sense, a spring tab (which on my truck is missing) mounted on an oil pan bolt!! Whoo..hoo!! Gotta go fix that!!

You Guys Rock! after about 30 seconds, I found the small hole on the block. Spring popped in right through the 40 years of grease. I found the carb leaking (leaking is not the right word, it was pouring out). Pulled the carb thinking it was a stuck float and found someone else must have tried it before as every screw was loose. The screw holes in the top were stripped, so I had to temp fix, with a couple small STOVEBOLTS of course. The old gal is running!. I even had to take it around the block.
