I recently purchased a Carter YF for my 1950 3100 (I wish I could tell you the exact model; however, all of the raised numbers on the side are rubbed to the point of being unrecognizable) -I rebuilt it, cleaned it up, it nows looks nearly immaculate.

After installing, then starting the engine, it really bogs down upon acceleration. Then, after a second or so, it catches up. It idles beautifully. I've tried adjusting (I think) everything on the outside and inside of the carburetor. Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!!

You may have a bad accererator pump. Look inside the top (engine not running) and work the linkage by hand. Your should see gas spray from the venturi tube or ring, which ever it has. If it sprays, you may have a low float adjustment.

If I remember right, YF's had a plastic small tube that went from the internal accel. pump housing to the squirter. These frequently split or fall off. Also, maybe when installing it you crushed it with pliers? If yers is ruined, sometimes a carb cleaner spray straw can be used as a replacement.

Best of luck!

Thanks, guys. Interesting...I cleaned and re-cleaned the carb inside and out and don't recall seeing the tube you're talking about. I don't have it (carb) in front of me, but I can't remember where a tube would (or could) connect.

I think Johnny is refering to alater model Carter. It,s either an accelerator pump problem, low float level or metering rod adjustment. You might have left out a check valve in the acel. pump circuit. Also check ign. timing. smile

I agree with trucktinker about the float adjustment, I allways start diagnosing problems from the most simplest and work my way up.anybody know the exact measurement for the float or do you eyeball it like me??you said you cleaned it real pretty-like,did you dip it over night? do they sell carb dippers in your area? it would be the size of a large coofee can,but a little taller, you can use a tabacco pipe cleaner to clean small holes, keeping in mind not to scratch the bores.anyway good luck, thats my two cents.and another thing to check is if the foat has a pinhole in it,rare but I've seen it.

Yeah, I soaked it over night. I cleaned out the holes with blasts of compressed air, then checked to see that they were all clear. I also checked for pin hole leaks in the float. I'm guessing it has something to do with the accelerator pump. Thanks.

Your jet size might be too small.
On my carter YF for the 235 57-62 the correct jet size is 395.
Anything smaller will give hesitation when punching the gas pedal.

The model number would help telling you if the carb is right for the engine.
I learned that there are literally dozens of carter YF versions all matching certain engines/years.
If you look at the long list of rebuild kits, you get the idea.
Very important to get the right kit, to make the carb work perfectly with the matching engine.
Could be that your carb was rebuild with different pieces.
