#32834 05/08/2004 6:02 PM | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 1,904 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2001 Posts: 1,904 | My Rochester Monojet carb squeals loudly out its throat when idling. If I give it a little gas the squeal goes away. I first thought it was the generator bearings going out.
Is this normal? I have one of those small after-market air cleaners on it. Will a better air cleaner muffle the sound?

1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.

Spray some W/D40 around the carb connections and especially around the base. If you have a leak, the engine should pick-up a few rpms and the noise should stop momentarily.

I found that if I played with the mixture screw I could get it to squeal. No vacuum leak. I had that car for 10 years, and when ever I messed with the carb I could get it to squeal or whistle by playing with the mixture.
I have heard one or two other carbs do the same thing, I assume it has to do with air passing over/around/thru passages in the carb throat. | | |
