My question is there suppose tobe a cross member for every row of bolts, or is using the penny washers standard practice? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 | the washers keep the boards from bowing/warping between the bed rails.... | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 42 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 42 | O.K. Maybe I didn't my question clear enough. How many cross members should there be on the underside of AD 1/2 shortbox bed? On this truck I have the one at the front by the forward bed wall. The one at the aft by the tailgate. The one just aft of the wheels that is supported by wooden blocks. And one that is just forward of the wheels that is kind of free floating. Like I said before the other holes in the bed rails just have penny washers and nuts on the underside of the bed boards. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 311 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 311 | Originally posted by oldkoot: When I was disassembling my bed to refinish the boards I noticed that not all of the carrage bolts that pass through the bed rails are attached to steel cross members, but just have penny washers on the underside of the bed boards. My question is there suppose tobe a cross member for every row of bolts, or is using the penny washers standard practice? This is how my 1949 truck bed is constructed. There are bolts at every cross member AND just the "penny washers" at the other holes. So they did it this way at least twice.
Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.

The front cross sill and the one just rear from the axle have bed to frame bolts that go through. The second cross sill, the one just forward from the axle, floats there slightly above the frame and does not bolt to the frame but only to the bed strips and angle strips. Bed strip and angle strip bolts that do not align with a cross sill have the 1-1/2" washer under the boards that holds the bed boards to the bedstrip.

What I don't get is the mounting kits available on line look like wood blocks with a hole drilled through, I can do that. Are they all the same height or do you need to set your frame level and install differant size blocks so the bed is parrallel to the frame? Are the pads for the blocks to reduce squeaking?
