The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Making a Stovebolt Bed Bed board template or pattern

Has anyone recently purchased a set of bed boards for a 1950, or by chance have taken pictures of their bed. I am thinking I would like to make my own bed out of oak, but have absolutely no pattern to go off. Any help would be appreciated.

I too am still in that deciding stage as to whether or not I want to use wood or corrugated steel. Guess time will tell

I made the planks for my 55 2nd with hand tools.

I bought the yellow pine locally, cured it in the garage for a period of time. Cut them to width with a table saw, used a router for the edges, skill sawed the grooves, then cut them to length. I just recommend that the metal strips be a little higher than the wood so when you slide sheets of stuff down the floor that it goes in smoothly (and doesn't scratch you cool floor).

I bought the metal strips at a swap meet for one of the vendors. Saved shipping costs.

I used Valspar polyurethane that I bought locally at Lowes for a finish, but you will find that everyone concocts their own favorite encapsulating solution. You may like them black.

All the bolts were bought locally in a box. I did not off-set the plank bolts and did not find it to be a problem.

did you happen to keep your plans when you cut your boards? or any plans at all from when you built your bed?

I will look around the garage and see what I have. I pulled them off a website but cannot remember which.

And. I will need to build bedwood for my 53 so sometime this year I will be back in business doing this again. Red58 posted two good sites with dimensions. I plan to use them when I get ready for the 53.
