There is a salvage '53 for sale on Ebay that in my opinion has a very unusual bed on it. There is no bed roll sides as is typical, but a 90º bend instead. Since the vehicle may be GMC rather than Chevrolet, is this standard?

I suspect the bed is non factory because it looks deeper than standard and the tailgate is different. Perhaps military?

It looks simple, solid, and clean (well, it looks as though it was clean). But it doesn't look like any '47-'53 bed that I've ever seen.

The dimensions look right for that truck. I bet you're right in assuming that it is a custom job. (sure complements the truck's design)

Stock bed would have had wood for a bed floor anyway, wouldn't it have?

I'm with 1956 it sure dosen't look like any stock bed i've seen, either.. maybe an aftermarket or custom job to replace the original.

Or maybe originally it shipped from the factory without a bed, and later somebody put that one on?

Strange indeed. First it's not a '53. It has the under bed fuel tank making it a '47-48. Second it is a long bed ½ ton. I don't think this was offered by Chevrolet so it must be a GMC. But that bed is a mystery.

Yup parklights in the front fenders under the headlights so front fenders at least are GMC. From the one front hub looks like an earlier (47-48 I think) Style, plus the tank under the bed says 47-48. The fresh air vent on the drivers side is also 47-48.
If you look at the large version of the bottom picture on the left you can see a coil spring and either a broken leaf spring (Odd Angle) or trailing arm which suggest later model rear suspension change. Also the back axle hub doesn't seem to match the front hub. And the weird I'd say homebuilt bed and tailgate. The AD truck beds are pretty simple other than the roll and the stamped spot for the fenders on the 54's. I've seen a couple trucks fixed up at show's with square beds edges like that and they both were homeade. I've even consided breaking some up out of heavier material for my part's chaser.
I'm calling it a Hodge Podge But if I were closer I'd go pick it up just to keep it from getting crushed, I see parts that could be saved and used, Heck I've pulled parts outta worse trucks.
Any of you guys that are close and have a place to keep it should save it.
