I have a few more questions. The 292 I am going to get is not complete. It is missing the fan, carburetor, flywheel and probably some other small things I can't think of. I think the carburetor is larger with a different bolt pattern than the smaller ones in this series, is this correct? Also, someone told me they thought the flywheel was different than the smaller series. It this is true, can another flywheel from the 230 or 250 be made to work? I am not too concerned about the other missing parts since I think I can come up with those rather easily. The carburetor and flywheel may be another matter. Thanks for the help.

The flywheel can be made to work by drilling the bolt holes out to 1/2 inch& getting 292 bolts. The other carbs will work but lose a little power because of smaller bore & venturi. Usually when you buy a rebuilt carb. they are the smaller one & nobody knows the difference. There are 2 different bolt paterns on fans. It originally had the large one but some water pumps are drilled for both. Universal fans have slots for any pattern.

Depends on what year 292 you're getting. The crankshaft flanges on the 1963-66 292s used 7/16" flywheel bolts and a single dowel pin. If yours has this then either the 230 or 250 flywheel (maybe even the SBC) should work with no problems. The 292s from 1967 on used 1/2 inch flywheel bolts on the cranks and had 3 pressed in dowel pins. The 292 factory flywheel holes are cast accordingly. So if you use another 6 cylinder flywheel besides the 292 on the '67 & up 292, you'll lose 2 dowel pins - even if you drill the bolt holes out to 1/2 inch.

It's best to get the factory fitted flywheel. They appear on Ebay all the time. In fact, here\'s one for a manual transmission really cheap that's ready to bolt on (it's about $20 more than shops here charge just for resurfacing).

I have a large ventura carb with very low miles. I just happened to get it buy a fluke. Usually when you order a rebuilt carb they for any six they give you the one for the 230/250 since those engines were the most common and those are the most common cores the rebuilders have. In my case I ordered a carb for a 250, and they gave me the larger 292 carb. However, I'm using a Holley/Weber, and plan to stick with it. Send me a pm is your interested.
