There was a time when this thing was a hot topic so I know at least one of you pulled it off.

Okay all of you that have pulled it off and kept quiet... let's say that I might have one with a GM bolt pattern without shifter. I'm not sure fabbing a shifter is possible with my limited skills.

Is it as simple as a hurst shifter for a mopar with the right shift lever?

Got mine in but don't have all the pics posted yet. I didn't like the the shifter out at the end of the tail housing so I built a bracket to move it forward. The bracket is also canted to the passenger side about 15 degrees. The shifter is a Hurst/Mopar factory A833 shifter that has the push-in stick, not bolt on. I used the 373 4089 Hurst installation kit for B body Mopar, only having to modify the reverse link.
Works well - the straight stick is centered between the dash and seat and hits neither, and with the stick canted, I don't have the stick banging my leg in 1-2.

I don't want to ruin your day or even your whole month, but are you sure that is an over drive trans. I have never looked at "Chevy" A833, but on the Mopar OD The 3-4 (front) shift arm has to be put on upside down. I.E. the shift arm is under the shaft and the 1-2 arm is still above the shaft. On this trans, overdrive is accomplished by switching the functions of 3rd and 4th. Direct drive function through the trans becomes 3rd. What used to be 3rd becomes 4th because that gear on the cluster is made larger than the gear above it on the main shaft.

For your sake, I hope that I'm wrong and chevy has made a different shift fork arrangment inside.

If you use this trans and shifter there a couple of changes you may want to make before you put it in. The drop in shifter is a little loose. If you weld it up it's harder to put in the vehicle but shifts are solid. Most of these already have a small hole front and rear of the shifter housing. These holes are in the right place for shifter stops, but you have to drill them larger, thread them and put in bolts and locking nuts.
I just took another look at your pictures. The small hole is visible on the front and is for the 2nd gear stop.
I like Corvairs also. I have a'65 Corsa conv. I've had it since '73 and I'm in the process of redoing it again. Rust on the bottom of the quarters and under the windshield. Yours looks nice. '67-68?

I went outside and glanced at my Chevy 89mm and the front lever is pointed down. If the lever is up, it might 'reverse' your shift pattern--that is 3rd is right and down and 4th is right and up. I have the stock GM shifter on mine and can email you a picture if you like.

I have an A-833 (the Mopar one) with no shifter, but I took the shifter levers off the side cover and cannot remember which way they go. If the c-4 in my 66 F**d dies, I may try to get enough pieces gathered up to run the A-833 in the F**d. At least I will be going from one odd ball to another wink

BTW, sharp Corvair. I like the latest ones the best.

Richard, as I understand it, the only 833 with the GM pattern is the overdrive, but I never did spin the shaft and count revolutions before I put it in. The seller was impressive in his knowledege of 4-speeds, so I trust him (http://www.jetboatbill.com/). I could very well have the 3-4 arm on upside down - never had anything to compare to. I haven't run it yet, but that would jump out at you in a hurry. It wouldn't ruin my day or month to have to flip it and cipher out the link. Carl, I sure would appreciate pics - [email protected]. Something for me to check out this weekend. Will advise, for anyone else pondering this trans.

The Corvair is a 66 Corsa, 140HP, 4 speed. Some surface rust on the belly but no cancer. It is a blast to drive.

Yup, It is an overdrive and I did have the 3-4 arm upside down. Fixed it easily, just flipped the arm and a little bend to the link. That would have been an interesting shakedown cruise.
This is Carl's with the GM shifter

There is a junkyard in San Antonio that had 3 or 4 vans w/ this trans-- you could probably get shifter and linkage pretty cheap. Mine fits fine in my 46 and doesn't hit my leg, even in stock position.
