Hey 'bolters... I was asked to followup on what I found... Well, Shoes were mounted correctly, in proper orientation... All springs and keepers were good.... So I took some measurements...
The completely compressed, installed diameter of the shoes was nearly .015" or 1/64", larger than the inside diameter of the drum... Plus the drum, while in appearance, seemed to NOT need to be turned, it tapered from outside to inside almost .005".
Tomorrow I'm off the my friendly NAPA to have the drums turned....
BUT, GET THIS!!! When I tried to remove the right side drum, it wouldn't budge... Out came the home-made puller... When it finally came loose so did the outer rollerbearing.... IN PIECES!!!
So now I'm back to square one... Turned drums, Raybestos shoes, (the ones I have were e-Bay winners  ) and all new roller bearings on both sides....
To think all this started simply bacause I found cracks in the flex lines!!! eek
It's a good thing this is a hobby.... grin grin grin

Sounds like you have learned a good lesson about buying from e-bay. Most are good, honest people. Some are unknowingly peddling junk, and a few are bad news. I'm careful about what I buy on e-bay. I avoid items than can be reprojunk, like seals, gaskets, brake shoes.

Sounds like you're on the right track now. Also, never replace brake shoes without turning the drums. When the shoes fail, either the shoes damaged the drums or vice versa. smile

If there's one thing I'm learning fast with this hobby, is that the simplest of jobs lead to the most complicated of procedures. Replacing a leaking oil seal on my '51 6400 has led to all the wheels coming off, new tires, and possibly six new wheels! It's easy to get going on a project, and before you know it, you've taken half the truck apart!!!

It's the putting it back together the right way that's hard!

Yeah!!! Tell me about it!
I'm having a lot of "FUN" fixing what was "FIXED" by the previous owner... As well as fixing it up...

Screwed up charging wiring resulted in a new internally regulated alternator, brackets and completely rebuilt/upgraded wiring. As well as new headlight wiring for halogen lamps, on relays ...

Cooling problem resulted in a new oversize 3 core radiator, electric fan on proper relays, hoses belts, thermostat, yadda, yadda, yadda ...

Old, inaccurate guages resulted in a billet dash and a full complement of Autometer, "old time" guages and related wiring harness. grin wink

And now, just a cursory "look see" (saw cracked flex line) is, so far, resulting in all new roller bearings, (the old ones looked like the last time they were greased was when **** pardoned Nixon). On my second set of shoes, (still haven't found a set that fit  ). All 3 flex lines replaced with new... Replace all four wheel cylinders and all springs and associated hardware, (since it was all apart anyway).

Girlfriends fear of "No seatbelts" (this truck never had any) resulted in all new belts for 3 positions and I even bolted the seat down, grin

And when I first bought it, I didn't favor the OEM wheels,(which weren't really OEM, not in '65 anyway), resulted in the need for 4 new 10x15 American Racing aluminum rims mounting 4 new 10.50x31 Goodyear Wranglers...

I have thus far restrained myself from actually realizing what I spend on my "hobby grin "...

My woman rationalizes it like this: "Middle age crisis... I could be out womanizing" wink

I'm still debating whether to upgrade to disc brakes, since I REALLY SHOULD, at least, install a dual chamber master cylinder.

After I FINALLY FINISH this one I still have to work on my '64 Carryall, and then there's the '61 I bought because "I really like the curved windshield!"... OH well... who REALLY needs retirement anyway?

Later, Pete
