My neighbor has a '63 Nova with a running 230 and powerglide. I'm not too interested in the powerglide although I've seen them installed in the '41-'46 pickups, there's one on e-bay now w/6 cyl and powerglide. Is a 230 a good suitable choice for my '41? Will the original trans. bolt up to the 230 or will I have to go with a later 3 speed full synchro? I'd like to keep as much stock appearance as I can. I want to keep the original looking floor shifter even if I go with a later 3 spd. What would be a good choice for the trans.? Just wanted to get your expert opinions since I have no idea what the best set up would be. Or should I continue my search for a good 235 or 261? Thanks in advance!

I believe that you can use the same tranny, but you have to go to the v-8 bell housing. I believe that the 41-46 has the clutch and brake attached to the bell housing, so that has to be considered. My personal opinion is that if I were going to upgrade to something that required a different bell housing, etc, I would just go ahead and replace the non-sycnro tranny and get something like a t-5 with overdrive, or at least a 60 model 4 speed thats set up with an open driveshaft. This would give you a stock looking truck with a more modern driveline and better rear end options.

There is allot of good information here on putting a T-5 five speed behind a 216-235-261 engine. This happens to be a 40 truck, but I am doing the same thing to my 37.
