Does anyone know if the 46 gas tank has some sort of baffle inside? The reason I ask this is that I removed my gas tank this last weekend and discovered a flat piece of matal sliding around inside. It looks to me to be some sort of baffle that has come loose. Will this cause a problem with anything. If so, any suggestions. It's way too big to fish out, so that's not an option.

Hi George- I think there are actually 2 baffles in there. Just flat pieces spot welded in to create 3 "compartments". I have seen them come loose before, but have no idea as to how it could be fixed without taking the tank apart or cutting an access hole in it at the very least.

I agree, it does have baffles, I cleaned and resealed my tank a couple of years ago.

You could JB weld it back into position accessing it through the sender hole.

Hey George, I have 2 extra 1946 gas tanks that are pretty decent. You can have one or both for free if your interested. Steppenwood, sure wish I'd run into you about a year or so ago. I took my gas tank into a radiator shop to have it cleaned and sealed. They tested it with compressed air and, uh, gave it a new shape which wasn't compatable with the truck. I had to buy a reconditioned one from Jim Carter. I think that somebody now makes a new one for an arm and a leg (Chevy of '40's?).

George, I can't imagine that loose baffle interferring with the fuel flow. Guess my only concern would be that it'd tangle with the sending unit.

Ya know, if a fellow was handy, he could drill a very small hole on the topside of that tank, prop the baffle in place(access through sender unit opening), and MIG it back in place. Just a thought........

That's an idea. You can hardly see the baffles through that tiny sender hole, you might have to use a couple of those telescopic magnets or something to reach in and move it around. It might also be a battle getting the baffle flipped back upright again, as it fits pretty tight in the tank?

George, I'll be up in the Sacramento area around the end of the month and can pick up one of the gas tanks that John offered. Plus I wouldn't mind getting a spare for my truck as well.
