Hum... An annoying 'wik-wik-wik' noise is coming from the drivetrain. It has a high pitch metalic sound, like a worn bearing, in the clutch area. It does NOT stop when I depress the clutch, so I'm ruling out the release bearing? It is quite noisy and getting on my nerves...
Any ideas what can cause this?
Any input would be appreciated,
thanks

Morning! Only when moving.
It modulates from a 'wikwikwikwikwik' to a 'wik-wik--wik---wik----wik' when slowing down...

I don't think it is "wik-wik-wik." Yer truck is saying "quick-quick-quick fix me!" (Laughing).

Without some more information it is hard to diagnose noises, he** I can't even diagnose my own.

Could be:

1. One thing scraping on another, like a brake shoe, tire contacting something, spring in the seat bouncin' up an' down.

2. Bearing noise can be almost anywhere--front, back, drivetrain, etc.

If you hear it at slower speeds (10 to 15 mph) maybe have somebody ride in the back (or let 'em drive, if you're not afraid). Try to pinpoint the location.

If you have GOOD, DEPENDABLE jack stands, maybe try raising the rear wheels. Unfortunately, some noises go away when there is no load. Just don't crawl under the truck up on jack stands when it is running--ever!

Whizzer: Good to see ya: Sounds like your clutch plates are getting worn. Does it shift alright or grind when shifting, clutch pressure on pedal Ok or does it feel weak, I agree with Glenn put it on stands let it idle and put it in gear. Isolating is your biggest problem. popcorn

Yes, the clutch is likely the culprit.
I have access to an alignment lift (a very safe lift for that kind of diagnosis), I'll keep you posted on my findings. Thanks!

IS this only when moving?
If so, it will be something inside the tranny or at the rear of the tranny or back toward the rear end.
Could be a wheel bearing/seal/dust-shield,,ANy recent work on the wheels???
Have you trued disconnecting the speedo cable from the tranny and then drive it to see if the noise goes away?

Mechaniac,
it is only when moving. I have replaced the front-right-outer bearing and will replace the inner tonight. I am almost sure that it comes from the transmission area, though. Now may be a good time to take out the trans, replace the rear motor support, check the clutch and replace the leaky rear main seal.
I wish I could have waited till winter...

Fritz, that's interesting as my speedo stopped working a while back. I'd have to check that out BEFORE attacking the trans. Thanks for the 'heads up'.

No problem, Fritz had you covered cool
I highly suspect the speedo cable since you stated that it quit working awhile back smile
-
Disconnect the fitting at the tranny(rear)and see if the noise goes away(eliminate the simple things first)

Well.
I just got back from lunch and before leaving I took the large 'floor section' out, leaving a great view of the trans and the road underneath. The noise is loud and coming from the trans/clutch area...
I'm well prepared (mentally and tool-wise) to tackle the job of removing the trans and clutch.
Can somebody give an overview of what to expect?
Is it a loooonnnng and dificult job?
Or one of those ''jee, there was nothin' to it'' affair?

Any input, stories, advice and insight appreciated,
whizzerick

You have to disconnect the drive shaft from the back of the transmission anyway. Do that, then try starting the engine.

Your noise may or may not be in the torque tube. That little test will help you pinpoint the wik-wik-wik..

Tony M, I disconnected the speedo cable.
The noise now has modulated from a 'wik-wik-wik' to a loud and constant 'schhhwwik-schhhwwik-schhhwwik-schhhwwik'.
It is annoying and very uncool.

53 4 me, this wont do: the noise stops when at a standstill. It's definitely a ''when the drivetrain is engaged'' kinda noise.
The clutch is working fine, the pedal is good.
Torque tube? We'll see.

Did you disconnect the cable at the transmission? I missed that you said that.

You might have a loose bolt in the torque tube u-joint. The bell is easy to disconnect, just remove the 4 bolts and mount and slide it aft. The transmission is easy to do if you have a cherry picker, you can take it out through the floor.

whiz, when you take the floor cover off, you should be able to tell if it is in the shaft/tube, someone told me that the transmission was not heavy, I guess at 62 I most be weak because to me that thing is pretty heavy, I handle mine enough a while back, Fred

whiz, I forgot and someone may have already advised, but when you pull off the floor cover, just set the brake, put it in gear and you will know real quick if it is in this area,,mine went out last yr, luke and others gave me instructions how to replace, mine u joints broke without any prior warning. I replaced mine without to much trouble other then doing it by myself and having to get under the truck many time to adjust the jack, at any rate, mine came out again after 8 miles, don't know why, I replaced mine with the blazer/s10 set up. a mech told me he thought that I may not have tighten the u bolts tight enough, I think they only require 7 lbs, did not have torque wrench, but I felt that I did have at least that much, that isn't much at all and I did not want to strip them out, anyway good luck, hang tough, as you know others will help, you see, I don't joke all of the time,,,,Fred

Try backing up for some distance at 10 or 12 mph, and see if you hear the same sound.

Report back.

Wizz, like Fritz says, disconnect the speedo cable at the trannie. If it is still connected to the trannie the cable is still turning. It is just not turning, or in this case, trying to turn the head. Disconnest it at the trannie before you rule it out. The speedo cable could be broke at any point between the trannie and the head. It sure sounds like the problem to me. Good luck. Mike cool

Since y'all can still hear, just turn your stereo up so loud you can't hear the wicky noise. Drive it till it breaks, it's easier to diagnose that way. grin
