I drive a 52 chevy truck with a 235 and a sm420 4 speed. It is a 3/4 ton so the torque tube is only half way back with an open drive shaft the the rear. My question is this. Can I get a tailpiece off a later sm420 and put it on my transmission and change my transmission to an open drive shaft? Has anyone out there done this? Any help would be appreciated

Did it last weekend. All you need is the back plate (figure eight looking thingy) and yoke. Make sure the new open yoke has ten splines (I heard some 60's SM420s had different splines).

I am using the driveshaft out of a '55-1 LWB GMC. It bolts right up, except for the rear u-joint. I can get a "junk joint" for that.
