HI,
I just got for free a mid-60's IHC Scout that has had a 250 inline six installed with a granny 4 speed and "rockwell" transfer case. I have no idea as the the year of the combo, nor do I have any idea to tell which trans and transfer case is actually in it. The 250 has the separate intake and exh manifolds, and a one barrel carb, and the tranny looks very similar to my SM420 in my 48 Chevy, but I can't be sure without swimming in the mud and crawling under it. Any tips as to how to ID this bugger would be appreciative. It does start and run, but all the hydraulics are dried ouot and need replaced, so need to get hte brakes and clutch fixed so I can test drive it. Thanks again, Garry

To id the engine, get the casting number off the block, should be on the passenger side in the rear lower area. These are raised numbers, not stamped. Then go to www.inliners.org and look it up.

The tranny is easy. If reverse is to the left and down, SM420, to the right and down SM465. More info on the tranny can be found at

Garry, A friend of mine has a couple of those 800 series Harvesters, a '61 and a '64, I think. I told him about this thread and he was interested in using a Chevy L6 in one of them for logistics reasons. Can the engine bolt up to the oem IHC tranny? Or do you need a GM-type drivetrain?

Well my Scout 80 is currently at my dads place so not ready access, but who-ever did the swap used Chevy engine trans and transfercase. He had to modify both the firewall for the trans etc, but he also cut out the center of the core support and the engine goes thru the support and the radiator is mounted right behind the grill. If you ever look under the hood of one of those old scouts, the slant 4 barely fill the engine bay, and the space between the radiator and the grill is like a foot or more... I('ts hard to tell what else would be needed as this one uses a Datsun clutch master and slave with some home engineering to fit it all up to the Chevy and IHC stuff. It's a fairly clean swap, but lots of mods need to be done to the center hup to clear everything.

That sounds about right, on the radiator. Would eliminating the belt-driven fan and replacing it with electrics add more nose room in the engine bay?
Also is there enough head room for a 292? [1-3/4"+ 250 height]
Lastly, would an SM 465 work on lieu of the SM 420? 420s are getting scarce.

Well as for the fan, I don't think that going electric would really give you much of anything, and that area between the core support and grill is pretty much dead space anyway. I am unsure if the trans is a 420 or a 465, as I haven't got over to my dads to see where reverse is. As for the 292, my scout has a home made 2 to 3 inch body lift, so clearance is not an issue on mine, I can measure the difference of what it would be with out the lift, but I still don't think it would be an issue, other than the style air cleaner you use. If you use an aircleaner from a 50's Chevy Car that puts the element beside the carb vice on top there should be no problem at all. Let me know how else I can help.

My buddy has been preoccupied with the falling balljoints on his '88 S/10 truck. When he has more time he'll read this back-log of posts and respond.

Wow, now that's one impressive piece of surgery! I'm sorry that I got sidetracked on ball joints pitman arms, emergency curbside rebuilds...I won't bore you. If you need help with the 250 or other chevy equip. questions these guys are the one's to ask, if you have IH questions, I have three 80 series with 153 to 304 powerplants stock. I'll tell you whatever I can about the architecture, but about the rest, I'm unsure of your question

did you ever stop to think, and then forget to start again
