the 216 in my 49 3600 started and ran well but was knocking so with engine inframe i adjusted the rod bearings, and #6 was +.002, #5 crankshaft journal and rod babbit is 'spun' and looks like a moonscape.i removed shims and also sanded rod cap for a closer fit. #1-4 are shiny and required no adjustment. I put the oil pan back on and am deciding what to do next. what do you recommend.
I would like to be able to drive the truck in and out of the barn and to the gas staion for while i do some other mechanical/cosmetic restoration.
is 'grey paint' in the bottom of the oil pan crud all thats left of bearings?
I don't have any precision measurement equipment to tell what else is worn.
I could
1-spend $2000 on a complete rebuild? I'm under the impression this would last 30K miles?
2-have the crankshaft repaired? is this "good as new"
3-buy a new rod? buy a used rod?
4-have the rod bearing repaired?
5-drive it until it squeals and/or destroys the engine?
to keep it original, a 235 swap is out

If I spent $2000 on a complete rebuild , and it only lasted 30k ,, I'd take it back to the engine rebuilder !
Question ,,1/ Do you want to keep the truck and drive it ?
2/ Do you want to keep undoing the motor and re-repairing it ?
If the answers are yes and no . Then I think doing the job needs to be done properly .
However , if you are short on money , then another (running) 216 is a valid option.
Someone who is modifying their truck may sell their 216 for a very small sum .
Good luck , smile

If you go the rebuild route, I would recommend going with insert style rod bearings. Your rods can be machined, or you can buy them new, I think.
