Like Joy said in her post in the Lounge, I'm just installed a new water pump on our 45 2 ton Chevy. This truck has a later 235 using an adapter allowing use of the original style 216 pump. The adapter has been in use for 2 years. The adapter is nice, retains the original wide fan belt pump for use with 6 volt generator, and keeps the fan in the stock higher location for better cooling. The Damper Doctor rebuilt a 235 damper fitted with the smaller wide pulley from a 216.
The new not rebuilt pump was ordered from Chevy Duty, excellent service. The pump is made in Mexico, looks nice, but has a machined cast iron pulley instead of the stamped metal pulley like the original pump. Before installing the pump in cramped quarters,I checked the fan fit.All bolt holes lined up, good. I bolted on the pump and adapter quickly, went to install the 216 style fan...oh no, the fan rivits foul on the pulley.Wildlife scatters , frightened by my swearing,#$@&^%$. Then out comes the grinder to notch the pulley slightly for the fan rivit heads.
If you buy on of these pumps, bolt up the fan to the pulley beforehand and check to see it draws up flush against the pulley flange, its way easier grind the pulley on your workbench. The original pump will be sent to Arthur Gould's in NY for rebuilding.

I bought a pump from Carter's for my '54 engine. I'm not thrilled with the cast pulley, mine broke at very low mileage. It had low mileage but was almost two years old because of the time it took to do my restoration. Carter's people responded that how do they know it had low mileage and I must have overtightened the belt. This is not the first vehicle I have owned or put a belt on, never saw this happen before. I found that local parts place carry's the same pump and also has a warranty, but rebuilding sounds like a better choice with the steel pulley.

BTW Tony, thanks for the info on the adapter, got your letter yesterday.

I also have the adapter. It is the way to go
I bought my water pump from Checkers auto parts
It is rebuilt but a lifetime guarantee.
This adapter raises the pump about 3 inches.
Only caution do not use the 55-62 harmonic
balancer it turns the stock pump too fast.

I had an e-mail address for the adapter but didn't get a reply. With the engine and tranny rebuild I'm doing I would gladly buy one, don't have time to re-invent the wheel. However, I do this kind of work for a living- experimental and development jet engine work- I can make any kind of adapter or bracket if I have to. If anyone contacts Dave please drop me an e-mail.
