I just purchased a 41-6 steering box with column and wheel to install in my 37,will the horn button and related parts from my 37 fit the 41-6 wheel as I have NOS parts on my 37. The wheel that I got with the set looks identical to my 37,someone removed the original button and replaced it with a non functioning later model and put a button on the column. This box looks bigger than my one in the 37 so I hope I got a 41-6 unit,are these boxes prone to excessive wear and should it be rebuilt before puttin in my 37 and if it needs to be rebuilt are they easy to work on and are parts available. If it has a good steering wheel and horn button that goes with it I will take you up on the offer. Can you gwt a idea on what it would cost to ship,my zipcode is 45432 and the shops is 45241. If it has a really good wheel and horn button I would be willing to send some money your way as the one that came with mine was supposed to be nice but its not. Jeff

My '36 1/2 had a '40-'47 steering box in it.

Not a direct bolt -in....the steering column wound up sticking up too straight, and put the steering wheel in the middle of the sight-line of the windshield.(It really looked like it didn't belong!)

The steering wheels and horn buttons are different too.....the older style ('32-'39) have a polished ring that's part of the steering wheel, around the perimeter of the soft rubber horn button, which has some springy gizmo molded into it...the '41-'47 wheel has a metal horn button with a threaded stud in the center which screws into a cup fastened to the wheel.

I think you might want to see about having the '37 steering gear rebuilt....or finding the correct unit (street rodders often give stock steering & running gear away); should be similar to '33-'36 car steering gear....

Just my thoughts....was looking for the "correct" gear for my '36 when that was an active project...the '41-'47 would never have worked-out right for me.

As to having it re-built, depends on whether you're patchin'-up or restoring and driving...if you're restoring and driving, better to clean, rebuild as needed, and re-lube now...

Yes, the box is wider, but will bolt right in,put one in my 37 . If you feel comfotable and have a manual,, disassemble the box, the barrel roller races can be worn or dented , makes it impossible to get a proper preload on the steering worm. Also check the sector shaft bushing, another potential wear area.Use sealer(not RTV) on the worm gear adjuster threads,sector adjustment screw and the bolts.That along with a new seal will keep in 90 weight gear lube, Grease is a poor lube choice,can't get to the recurcilating balls.Or if you can find it,use the heavy GM steering lube.The 41-47 box makes for much better steering.

I will probably send it out and let someone who knows what they are doing go through the box so it will be right the first time. Is there any difference in the shaft lenghts between the 37 and 46 as I hope its not longer as I can use all the room I can get in this truck. Jeff
