I'm choosing the spin-on oil filter that I'll use with my Moroso remote adapter on my full-flow 261. I chose the adapter that takes the Chevy filters for V8s.

Since the filter will be closed end down, is there any need to get an anti-drain back type? Is syphoning a problem? A Fram PH13 (or equivalent) seems OK.

There are 2 quart filters available but are these only the racing variety? I wouldn't mind a larger filtering surface to help with oil pressure on cold, cold winter mornings.

Thanks!!

I would recommend against using the chevy style oil filters since they don't have a bypass valve in the filter. The bypass valve is needed to allow oil to bypass the oil filter due to ecxcessive restriction such as cold oil. If you don't have a bypass valve you risk the inner tube of the filter collapsing and flushing filter media through your engine. The best is to use the ford/chrysler type of filter. The only gm style filter (that I know of) which incorporates both a bypass valve and the antidrain back valve is the NAPA 1072. The 1072 was designed for wisconcin engines and probably not readily available.

If you mount the filter so it is level with or below the hose ports on the block you won't have to worry about drainback.

I haven't noticed a drainback problem with my full flow cannister filter mounted to the manifold of my 261, though. The oil pressure comes up right away when I start it.

Jason is correct, any Ford type full size filter will have a bypass and anti drain back valve.I 've done this a bunch of times, the filter head can be mounted just behind the generator/alternator on the unused side motor mount holes,it's low and out of the way. Try to avoid using sharp bend right angle fittings as each one reduces available oil pressure by a few PSI.

I see you are talking about a spin on filter. I have a 59 apache with the canister filter mounted to the manifold. Where can i purchase a spin on adapter kit and where is the best place to mount it? Thank you,

Brad, I bought the pricey Moroso remote adapter from Jeg's with the plan to mount it on the manifold so I could use my hoses which I also paid too much for. The hoses are the big ones with 1/2" NPT threads.

I just got off the phone with NAPA and they have the 1072 filter. So as long as I stick with that one, I can mount it on the manifold, right?

Thanks, everyone!!
