I was reading the ole '54 Shop manual, and it says thus: "Hand screw the tapered end of the oil pump retainer bolt into the recess on the oil pump body. Tighten the bolt snug and hold in place while tightening the jam nut. Be careful not to overtighten oil pump retainer bolt, as excessive torque can cause breakage of distributor drive shaft or tang..." pretty interesting, eh? chip
