Finally got my C30 donor vehicle home. (I have a digital photo but can't figure out how to add it to this post) Complete with a transplant 292 engine and 4 spd trans for my 42, 1.5 ton G-7107 4x4. Dove right into it, carefully removing the wiring harness, cut the dash out and cleared my way to the engine only to discover a hole in the block the size of PNC Park. The vehicle was sitting in a friends construction yard with weeds all around it and no wheels so you could not crawl under it to take a look. From what I could see the drive train looked OK unfortunately, the hole was not visable until the dash was removed. The truck had been damaged when a hill side slid into a building, knocking it over on the truck. Fortunately the truck still has enough good parts to make it worth taking apart.

The engine is a late model 292 with polution control components, does anyone know if late model heads, brackets and manifolds will fit earlier model 292's?

The truck was free so it was like a huge Christmas present, oh well I guess you get what you pay for. Back to the drawing board.

I'm curious here....a C-30 is just a one-ton conventional truck. Had to "cut the dash out" to see the hole??? Is it just water frozen type break in back? Maybe if parts laying around the hole, you can have welded/brazed back in. If it was on side and a rod, NEVER MIND! You buy trucks like I do, the "dreams" cloud up your mind and you can't see the "crap" you really ARE getting!

Try getting a 292 from FliteLine in Arkansas. I bought one through Southeast Engines in Atlanta and it looks pretty good. About $500 for a short block. Hope these pages are viewable.

Actually, the desigignation is probably a G30 Chevrolet. The vehicle is a high cube step van similar to what the snap-on-tool man would use.

When the building fell on the van it collapsed the front of the vehicle compressing the dash down over the engine compartment. Looking through the hood compartment the only damage evident was the air cleaner crushed down over the carb. It appears the exhaust system buckled and punched the hole in the block including, breaking the cast flange where the oil pan bolts on. The internal components appear to be ok.

The vehicle has a 14 bolt corporate rear in decent shape, hopefully I'll be able to sell a few parts to defray additional engine costs.

Boy was I wrong! Finally got the donor vehicle torn down to the point I can pull the engine and got a good look through the hole in the block at the innards, #5 connecting rod is gonzo. Must of been one hell of a bang. The truck had been used to haul tuxedos, the driver must of been late for a wedding and cranked out about 5k rpm.

Ftyler, you mentioned your new short block was made in Mexico, apparently all later model 292s were made there. This particular block was made in Mexico too, I hope you have better luck.

Oh well, the way I see it I got a boat load of useable parts and I can use the engine and trans for a mock fit up and mods on my 42, so when I finally get a good engine it will drop right in.

From what I understand, you might not want to use the post '76 integral head components, since you can't use headers or an aftermarket 2 or 4 Bbl carb intake with that set up. Just my .02.
