I know the weight of my 305 V-6, but what was the biggest straight 6 weight?

Was it one of our's?

Thinking cap time!

We once had a Ward Lafrance fire truck with a 711 cubic inch Waukesha in line 6 cylinder. That thing had as much cast iron as any three stovebolts.

D**** Cummins? 360 cu. in. in 6 straight cyl. I think it adds about 500 lbs to the truck although some of that might be in other heavy duty parts. Or do you want gasoline?

GASOLINE if possible. I was viewing a F**D page and saw the weights of a 460 OOOF! This guy wrote down the weights all the parts to the motor prior to installation.! Apples and oranges!

That Waukesha was a gas motor.

I also did some work on a 1946 Mack Fire truck that had a big inline six. I am not sure of the cubic inch displacement although the number 707 rings a bell. It had two spark plugs in each cylinder and two distributors.

Well I don't know the weight but I know it is BIG. My Stovebolt-1945 GMC COE Victory Truck has a 308 gas engine straight six. It comes apart in three pieces (so it must be really heavy to move)- you have the head- then the cylinders- and then the lower end, where the crank is. This is not the biggest of the old GMC big sixes but it is of the same size (like 216,235 and 261 are all basically the same size, in weight). Oh also, this is a running-rolling truck. I also get 12 miles to the gallon- up or down hill, loaded or unloaded, or just sitting running in the yard-LOL Just a great old work truck-no showoff- just work.

MACK RAN A 673 , WAS PRETTY BIG, ALSO INTERNATIONAL RAN A 6 CALLED A RED DIAMOND--THINK IT WAS 573 CUBES. BOTH REAL LONG STROKE, BOTH MONSTEROUS. BIGGEST GAS ENGINE I EVER WORKED ON WAS A MURPHY, USED ON BIG POWER EQUIPMENT LIKE POWER SHOVELS. cool

Mack largest displacement gas engine was a 707 cube 6 cylinder, 5 inch bore , 6 inch stroke, 617 lbs torque at 1200 rpm.Hall Scott had a 1091 cube 6 cylinder gas, torque rated at 960 ft lbs.Another monster was the 1197 cubic inch Waukesha 6 cylinder.I have no weights for these engines, but they must be at least 1500 lbs.I drove a Mack 707 tractor and flatbed.Slow powerful and 2 MPG.

GMC ran their 503 cubic inch six cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine in the early 50s. Does that qualify?

I don't know how this rates with the big trucks, but my 1952 Chris Craft Sportsman had the MBL engine which was the biggest Chris Craft ever made. Flat head 6, huge 1bbl updraft carb, bronze exhaust, and a ghastly looking open flywheel. Transmission was mounted to what would have been the front of the engine if it had been in a car, but they put them in backwards so they could angle them towards the prop. Anyway it was 158 h.p., and there is no match for the sweet sound of a water cooled exhaust burbling through the water.

Compared to my 235, this engine was a beast.

cool

I volunteer at the Age of Steam RR museum here in Dallas, and we have some big honking 6's out there. Our M160 powered baggage car has a 6-576 diesel (576 ci per cylinder), and we also have a Fairbanks and Morris 1200 Hp diesel which has 6 cylinders, but 12 pistons which meet in the middle to make compression (dual cranks). The overall winner though is the DD40 which has twin 16-645 diesels (645 ci per cylinder) for 10,320 cci and a tractive effort of 136,000 lbs. The steam equivalent there would be the union pacific 4-8-8-4 "big boy" locomotive which weighed 1.2 millon pounds (with tender fully loaded) and a mere 7000 hp. You never turn a bolt there without at least a 6 ft. cheater on it!

(and the excutive director drives a 60 chevy pickup with a 6 to boot!)
