My father-in-law and his buddies were advocates of the stovebolt six
(Chevy six-cylinder up to early fifties) and on at least one occasion
talked about a modification they called "splitfire." They said they'd
take the cam, cut it in the middle, rotate one end 180 degrees, and
weld it back together so two cylinders would be operating together,
intake, compression, power, and exhaust. I don't know that they said
how they'd get two plugs to fire together, but I guess they managed
it. This was thirty plus years ago and most of the people are gone
now, so there's really nobody to ask.
Has anybody else heard of doing this? Are there any advantages for
the hot rodder other than a really unusual (I'm guessing) exhaust
sound? A fellow posted this question in the a.a.a. newsgroup this morning, and though it's not something I'd bother with, it caught my fancy. I guess it's technically feasible if the spark issues are resolved. Anybody here ever heard of anything like this? Joe | | |

The torque is awesome, but it's a terribly pricey modification, involving a special crankshaft, cam, and distributor. You're right about the exhaust note, it's unmistakeable once you'ver heard one run!
