Hello Everyone!
I have a 69 GMC 3/4 ton with a 1971 400 sm blk with a manual four speed trans.
A TH400 auto was given to me.
Has anyone performed this swap before? If so, can you give me some advice?
Thanks
jwheels

You need to know what vehicle it came out of,then you will need to decide which transfer case to use,a 203 or a 205 and the mount adapter to go with it,unless you plan on running a divorced mounted case, then you would use a 2 wheel drive Turbo 400.

jwheels . . . is your truck 4wd or 2wd?

In either case, you will need a flex plate for your engine to bolt the torque converter too. Also - some (all?) 400 small blocks were externally balanced and care should be given to ensure that you have the proper flex plate that has the appropriate balance for that motor.

The other items that will need attention are the cross member to support the tailshaft of the transmission and the driveline (did you get the rear transmission yoke with the deal?)

Seems like the T400 has a solenoid instead of a TV cable going to the carburetor linkage. You will need a throttle position switch to wire into the transmission to tell it when to downshift when you lay your foot into it. You will also obviously need to hook up a transmission shifter / cable - Lokar or B&M make all manner of automatic transmission shifter solutions for your rig - or you could rob one from one of hundreds of hulks sitting in wrecking yards. While you are in the wrecking yard - check the driveline and cross members too.

I am sure I have probably missed a few things or perhaps steered a detail or two into the ditch, but you get the idea. The T400 is a bullet proof tranny if you keep it cool and the fluid clean. Have fun! smile

Jwheels,

Also remember to take out the pilot bushing from the back of the crank.

Later, Kinky6.

Kickdown switch for the 69 is mounted on the carb, attaches to the mounting stud closest to the drive. It's a real pain. The 71 & on used a switch connected to the accelerator pedal, supposed to be a lot easier to work with, but requires the pedal mount and cable to convert. Good luck on finding parts for either one. You might try the 67-72 web page if you need some of the parts.

Does the 400 have a shift kit in it? It will help make the clutches last longer.
