Pull the high voltage wire from the center of the dist. cap. Hold the end near the block and have some one crank the engine. It should spark over half an inch away. If it has no spark or just a small spark it's shot. Careful how you hold the wire or you will get shocked. If it's out of the truck. Most parts stores will test them.
if it dosen't need fixed, break it

Check your wire from the points to the coil to make sure it isn't grounded out.

#29369 12/12/2002 4:27 AM | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 31 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 31 | Some months ago I had my truck quit and I started with the basics; fuel, coil, pionts ect. and still had a truck that wouldn't start. Ended up being the rotor. The end that presses against the cap was a rivit and the moisture thru the years made it rust and wouldn't let the spark travel to the plugs... Just a place to look.
