I am after all still learning how to drive this old truck as it wasn't running before I started the renovation. As long as I double clutch on the up shift , most of the time it won't grind. If I don't double clutch it grinds bad. Down shifting can't be done without bad grinding. Nothing was done to the trans when the truck was apart other than a good cleaning and new gaskets and lube. It has a new clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate. I have tried adjusting the clutch everyway possible and this is the best I can get it and it is all the way out. I'm wondering if I have a trans problem?

#29016 06/02/2003 5:32 AM | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | as Sidehill sez, Bill - nothin wrong w/ the tranny cept age-ed design - the 46 4spd had no syncros, so ya need to double clutch up and down [or upshift veerrry slow] - takes some learnin to get it just right, but it can be done up or down w/ no grind [majority of the time!] - downshifting takes higher revs in the neutral step, upshifting, no gas]

Doesn't seem to make much difference whether I double clutch or not. Down shifting, I usually double clutch and give the throttle a blip at the time the clutch is out in the neutral position. Still takes a lot of practice.
