I am missing a breather from the rear axle of my '42 Chevy 1/2 ton. I have not found any in the catalogs. What have people used in place of this? I'm don't care about originallity as much as funtionallity and any ideas would be helpful. Thank you.

The breather on my 52 is a 1/4" pipe fitting with a groove cut in it and a piece of sheet metal crimped over it. You could take a close nipple and a cap, drill holes in the side of the cap near the top, or drill holes in the nipple. Holes need to be small to keep dirt out.

Try putting an ad in the swap meet, surely someone has one in a rear end the replaced. You could also try a salvage yard that has older vehicles, or give one of the on-line vendors a call. Jeff at Bowtie Bits probably has some.

Under the crimped metal cap , there ought to be a little , delicate spring , with a thin piece of mica or similar as a flap valve . This kept the damp and dust out , and allowed any positive pressure build up to vent . I have used Toyota Landcruiser breathers before , but I'm sure you will be able to find something to fit in your local pick and pull yard .

Lightholder;
My breather was all locked up. Couldn't get it apart for anything. Ended up taking a 1/8 mpt by 1/4 brass barb fitting and put a electrical copper hollow round fitting for crimping over #12 wire over the barb. Closed one open of the ground fitting and just slightly crimped the other end so it wouldn't rise over the ring on the barb end. Copper ground fitting would rise and fall nicely on the barb whenever the pressure built up. Hopefully it'll last a long time. :rolleyes:
