I just rebuilt my Rochester B on my 1950. It runs great but leaks where the top half meets the bowl. From what I can tell in the postings, it is typically a warped housing. Can I put any kind of sealer on the gasket that might help (High Tack Red from Permatex...)?
Any other thoughts? Would it be better to get a Carter? If so, which one and is it a straight swap? | | |

My Rochester B has always leaked there too. Afterwhile I just figured it was the nature of the beast. Maybe I should look into this a little more carefully also.

The Carter carbs are better, but there's nothing wrong with your Rochester. I've had some success draw-filing the tops of carburetors where the main body and the top meet, but it has to be done carefully. During a rebuild, take a big, flat file, and carefully dress the mating surfaces unti they fit flush and compress the gasket evenly at all points. Be sure and do a good cleanup to keep the file shavings from getting into passageways and clogging them. I really don't like sealers anywhere around a carburetor, or intake mainfold. There's just too much risk of getting it pulled into a vacuum passageway and ending up sealing off the wrong place!

I found a brand new rebuilt rochester in the junkyard that didn't even have a grease mark on it. I took off the 4 screws and the inside of the bowl was brand new looking. The gas inside was still good and smelled fresh. The side of the carb had a "rebuilt" sticker on it. I think the PO tried to get the truck running but gave up and junked it. Anyway's 16 dollars at pick and pull and I'm going to put it on if the leak persists on the original. If I try the filing method and it works I'll keep the other carb for a future two carb offy setup. | | |
