ok, i was under the 53 a couple days ago and upon closeer inspection i have found that the four speed in the truck isnt an sm420 like i assumed would be,
what else could it have been in 53 in the 6400 16,000GVW trucks ? it is cast iron case and it has at least one PTO because its a grain dump truck.
are no marking on the shift knob.

thanks for anything

From the factory only the SM420 was offered from my info.

There were aftermarket trannies, but I believe that they were all offered as a secondary transmission behind the SM420.

The PTO setup was generally a bolt-on to the side of the SM420. Are you sure the transmission is not just an SM420 with the PTO add on?

The Sm-420 is actually a pretty small transmission. It is kind of tall and skinny. If you have reverse to the left and back, chances are that is what it is. If it has a reverse lockout lever then it is one of the earlier crashbox 4 speeds.

nice,
will have to look under the truck again, normally i can identify a 420 and definitely a 465, but this one under the truck looks like neither, maybe its cuz of the no ribs on case casting 47-53 style thats throwing me off.
it just looks way different than a 420 or even 465(of course) and reverse is on left like a 420 is supposed ot have, did any other 4 speed have left hand reverse ?

thanks
