Hi,
My name is Jim Low and I am the proud owner of a 51 GMC 1 Ton. I was just browsing around and found this site. This is real cool.
Does anyone have any ideas for a good six for my truck? I would like to have plenty of power but I don't want to go the v8 route so any ideas would be welcomed.
Also i would like to have a 5 speed O/D. Thanks

Think about a 302 GMC I'm not shure about the tranny.Good luck

You can 'hopup' your GMC 6! Lots nice stuff out there.Look for some old speed stuff
I liked my little 228 the 302 is MUCH stronger.I use the same stuff on both of em.

Look next to the dist. for the number the first three are the engine size!

Jim, go look at the angled machined surface on the side of your engine, right behind the distributer. Take a knife or a screwdriver, scape off the crud, and look at the numbers stamped on there. You might have to use a flashlight at different angles before you can read them. The first three numbers are your engine size - now is that handy, or what? The most likely would be 228, possibly 236 or 248.
The 302 was made from '52 until '59. About half of them went into army duece and a halfs, the rest went into 2 & 1/2 or 3 ton commercial trucks. It has the same outside dimensions as your stock engine.

As near as I can tell I've got a 248.
should I build this motor or go with a 302?
Funding is not much of an issue so blow away

If money's no object, go for the 302. Not cheap to build, but it's hard to beat cubic inches for more power.

Sorry I don't live in Ft. Collins It's just where i was staying when i registered.(maybe i should change that.)My home is in Austin Tx. so I'm quite a way's away.I found a 302 down here and I sent it to the machine shop.Any ideas on what mods I should use to soup it up? Thanks.

i'm going to start on my 302 soon and i'm thinking that i will use a water heated clifford intake with a edelbrock 500 4 barrel carb and maybe a nixon repro header. also will use a H.E.I. ignition. i'm sticking to the original cam as this is a N.O.S. short block that i'm using. you may want to go with a little hotter cam, the guys here on the board can help you with the type [lift duration etc]. you might be interested in the inliners international web site [ and joining the club too] lots of helpful people just like here!!!

My brother(Little Jimmy)is building a 302 for his '50 GMC and he's planning on putting 3 weber sidedraft's on it There are lot's of options,if funding is not an issue you should go with a 12 port head very cool!
maybe an old Hilborn fuel injection converted to electronic (also very cool)good luck!

Just happen to know that. Check out Arias pistons. They are repoping the 12 port GMC head. Be prepared for sticker shock, I know I wasn't. They also can probably set you in the right direction for FI. Hope this helps.

I do have their address, but it is at home. I'll try and find it. However they are located in So. Calif. Might try a web search. It's been a couple of years since I contacted them, and got some bad sticker shock. Hope this helps, and will get back if I find anything.

Try ariaspistons.com. Has address telephone and all that stuff. Didn't have the GMC 12 port in their website, but I had to call them to get information. They sent me a brochoure(sp).

Ok I called Arias And they say they have a 12 port with fuel injectors already in it. is this the right thing for my truck? If so i will order one. also i've got the block and the crank back but i decied to wait on the head unti i found out more.

Dabond, thanks, it worked out. But a friend of ours here was kind enough to send me some pics of a 12 port with FI, that was just what I was looking for. Only saw a set up like that in a Hot Rod Magazine of the fifties, never had any pics of one in a decente size, both sides, etc...cool set up.

Can anybody tell me what kind of power I'll be looking at with the 12 port and fuel injection?
I'm kinda the street rodder type. My '39 coupe is powered by a Hardcore Merlin 632 with a blower,two edelbrock 750's and nitrous
I know that with a truck and a 6 I won't be looking at that kind of power but I want to be able to roast the kid in the rice grinder at the red light Thank's

400+ on Gas...... NO BLOWER The heads won't take the pressure of Nitrous for long!
But it wouldbe a ride!
400+ is my working number I'm no gonna tell you the real HP you will find it soon enough

Gosh Jim if you want to roast the rice grinders drive the '39 That thing gotta have what, about 1600 HP and about 1300 ft.lbs What tranny have you got in the '39? Whatever it is it will probably worck in the truck Go with the 12 port and FI if moneies no problem

Yeah I can roast'em with the '39 The '39's got a Richmond 6 speed now. It started out with a WC T-5 and it was fine till the first stoplight after that,well to put it lightly I no longer had a tranny My question is will the 6 speed work?
I've heared that the T-5 bolts up good but is it strong enuff? :rolleyes: Thank's

Jim, if you've got the bucks by all means get a richmond 6 for your truck. It should bolt in easily, maybe a couple of mods but minor. WoW, really envy ya man. I'm probbably going to end up with either a WC T-5 or a toploader.
