Though my '62 235 is doing me just fine,I have access to a '64 292 long block for $100 which is in very good condition. Will it swap out with a 235 using a sm420 ?? Is there an issue with the front motor mount compatibility?

I can always store it in my company's warehouse up high on a pallet for another winter project.

The 292 uses the sbc V8 bellhousing pattern, so the bellhousing will have to be changed also. I believe the input shaft on the SM420 is the same, but you'll want to check that. The biggest pain-in-the-neck with the 292 is that is uses staggered side mounts unique to that engine (the RH mount is placed forward of the LH one). A standard V8 mount won't work.
The 292 is a high-torque engine that is fun to drive... plus it has 7 main bearings, full pressure oiling, and HD truck exhaust valves.

The SM420 will bolt to the bell housing on the 292, GM was still using the sm420 until 67 or so.

For motor mounts go to www.stoveboltengineco.com

The biggest hurdle will probably be radiator clearance, the 292 is longer (and narrower) than the 235. Most guys go with an electric fan and a bigger radiator.

Craig - I am putting a 292 with a T5 tranny into a '51 suburban with a '67 chev pickup rearend. I have looked this over several times with other people who have done the same swap with a 250 and 292 and it is doable without much effort aside from the motor mounts.

If done with careful attention to motor position, it can even use a traditional fan on the waterpump -

As Fred mentioned, you can use your stock SM420 with a later model bell housing - however this limits how far you can set the motor back toward the firewall and may make use of a traditional fan on the waterpump impossible.

Ken, what interferes on that setup? And is there any reasonable rework that can be done to fix it?

I've seen just a few L series engines in Chevies from the 6 cylinder area. All had the crossmember cut that the held the rear motor(clutch housing) mounts on the old 6's. I'm thinking you may need a older style V-8 or truck clutch housing with the removable inspection pan for clearance? Cutting out the crossmember and not replacing it isn't so good for the handling.

I just saw one of those V-8 bellhousings with a SM420 attached at my local junkyard. Asking price was $100.00 for the whole assembly.
