I finally concluded that mine was the 250. Accoding to GM, the only six cylinder engines used in half ton pickups in 1966 were the 250 and the 292. And it definitely ain't a 292. I picked this engine up and it was represented to be a 250, and I want to make sure.
A newer Motor manual might have the code by the distributor. My manual only goes up to 1968.
Can someone please look this up! Thanks!

The manual I have does not list an engine with the final code of A. There should be either 2 or 3 Alpha characters at the end of the F0402. It looks like all Truck engines would have a "T" as the first of the characters.

Both were the same the difference being the crank and pistons. The crank casting number for a 230 is #3850817 and for a 250 #3962084. The heads are also different and the casting for a 230 is #3824437 and 250 #6259693. These are for Cherolet cars only. The truck section only list block castings. The 230 is for 1966-'70 and the 250 is for 1966-'79. Joe | | |

Why don't you just drive down to Southeast Engines down off Boldercrest and get a 292 short block. Will cost you $530 + an old core if you can find one. No core will cost ya a couple hundred more.
If that old 230 (or 250) has passed the midpoint of its life cycle then I think it might be a good idea to consider investing in the 292. That is, if you want to stay with a 6. | | |
