However, I have a rolling chassis restored with cab bolted on. I am anxious to try to bring the old 216 back to life. What essential wiring can I do just to try to get the beast running. Have not put in a wiring harness yet. Do I have to do that and tape off all the unused connectors, or is there some Mickey Mouse wire job I can do just to try to get the engine going? Hook up a good heavy cable from the frame ground to the the neg of the battery ( Chev I take it). Connect the positive lead to the large terminal on the starter. Run a small clipcord from the starter terminal to the supply side or +ve side of the coil. The other side of the coil is attached to the distributor points.
MAKE NOTE THAT to stop the engine you have to pull the clipcord or the battery lead.
Also, don't use jumper cables to connect the battery, they just won't do the job.

If you are doing this from inside the cab, it would be useful to have a way of cutting the power in case you need to. I had the battery on the floor and I could pull the battery cable.

I went to the hardware store and bought a heavy duty toggle switch and mounted in one of the radio knob holes. I ran a 16 gauge wire from the battery terminal on the starter to the switch and back to the primary (+) side of the coil. It worked great.
