My son & I are working on an mostly original truck, but it's too slow to really enjoy. We've been told to "cut it" and make it a V8/AT/etc... or raplace the ring & pinion from a 3.90-4.11( not sure what we have now)to a 3.38 or... change the tranny to a Saginaw 68-75 model 4spd (I can't see how that'll help- 4th gear is still about the same ratio). We're really stumped. What should we do to take a 235/4spd and make it run down the road at 65/70mph without it's being wound up too tight?

One thing does lead to another. You might as well start by laying out the options, costs, and what you want. Taller gears is easy enough, but going faster without better brakes and suspension upgrades is not such a good idea.
With the 3.90 gears, an overdrive tranny would be a nice upgrade. The 3.38 is another option. In either case, plan on dumping the stock "one shot" master cylinder and converting to a dual master, going through all the suspension stuff, adding roller bearings, maybe disc brakes up front. Tie rod upgrade, spring rebuild or replace, front sway bar, shocks, all lotta stuff to look at. $$$$ Or just maintain it, keep it running good , and stay in the slow lane. I'd at least do a total rebuild/upgrade of the brakes.
My '55 first is now waiting for the brake work. Too many close shaves, even at 40 mph. grin

I dont know about the first series, but my second series allows you to slap a V8 in there with the V8 motor mounts, I have a set that I am not using if you want a pic to have an idea what they look like. Also, my Dad said I could always change the gear ratio in the tranny, or rear end so it would rap out at 55 with the V8. Thats all I can help you with, good luck on your project!

Hey Dabean -- What do you mean by wound up? The old 235 engine is noisy, especially the fan. It is never going to hum along quietly like a modern V6 in a well insulated sedan. It will always sound like an old truck. With 355 gears you should be able to cruise at 65 real nice, same with an overdrive 3 speed tranny.

If you're wanting to run a 1/2 ton at 65-70, you need to upgrade the brakes. They were designed for running at 50. I would recommend either putting discs on the front or going with some of the new technology linings in your drums.

I installed a three speed overdrive in my 62 1/2 ton with 235 engine-works great but now need better braking. Fred T would you please give more information on your statement " new technology linings in your drums?" I still have drums all around. Thanks for your help! EDABBS

Edabbs, I think Fred T may have been referring to the linings offered here...www.praisedynobrake.com If not I'm sure he will correct me, or offer other sources for them.
