How can I tell if a lower balljoint has failed/is failing?
Please refrain from letting me know about the spindle falling off ! ! grin
Thanks,
Mike

First, you need to get the weight of the vehicle off the ball joint, by jacking up under the control arm until the tire just clears the ground by an inch or so. Put a long pry bar under the tire, and try to lift it. More than a very slight bit of slack indicates a worn ball joint.

Jerry,
Thanks.
I guess I should mentioned that procedure too.
What I was after was a visual indication as on some other vehicles where if the bottom of the joint has collapsed a certain amount wear was indicated.
These (lowers) appear flat across the bottom.
We rebuilt the front end several years ago, and I didn't make note of their position then.
Of course I will do what you mentioned, I was just looking for another point of reference/verification.
Thanks again.
Love this site !
Mike
