I am in the process of installing a 235 in my 46 3/4 ton. i was planning on installing a later 4 speed out of a 1 ton (53) when i discovered that i had an enclosed driveline on the 4 speed i have in there now. Can i go to a open driveline? How difficult would this swap be? should i just resign to be a double clutcher? any help appreciated.

Phil,

Is your driveshaft enclosed all the way to the rear-end or is it a two piece shaft with the front portion enclosed and the rear portion open?

If the rear portion is open, then you should be able to adapt a two piece open shaft from a later Chevy pickup. Most competent automotive machine shops can shorten or retube shafts to change the length and ends as needed to fit your specific truck. Bigger cities usually have specialty driveline shops that can do the work also.

Tourque tube doesn't mean double clutching unless your tranny is worn out .

It's good excersize anyway :p

My old '46 had the original tranny and torque tube , it shifed just fine , only 1st. is non-synchro .

There is no problem so difficult it cannot be overcome by generous application of brute force & ignorance
