So maybe I'm getting old, but the steering effort to wheel my '54 Chevy 3100 around is getting intolerable. Realize of course I can change the whole front axle upgrading suspension and yada yada. I don't want to street rod the old girl- just reduce the effort on me. So, is there a bolt on unit out there that fits an old pickup without alot of fabrication?

Have you done any rebuilding of the front end (king pins, steering box, etc)? I was amazed at the improvement in steering ease after doing all of the above.

This is written up fairly frequently in Classic Trucks and Custom Classic Trucks. There is a kit available to add PS while keeping the straight axle. It involves a Toyota PS box and a U-joint and adapter for the original column. Oh, you also change the Pitman arm and drag link.

Ok, the latest article that I have is in the May 2004 issue of Custom Classic Trucks. They talk about a complete kit available from Classic Performance products and there is an extensive pictorial presentation in the article.
