I was driving home last night and my Truck started to have a burning smell and was riding rough. I couldn't get it over 35 and when I tried it sounded like I was reving it up. Got home and checked under hood. fluid every wear. Transmission fluid. The truck will not move when put into gear it jumps but doesn't move. I know this is the transmission, but what might this be and how should I fix it?

Are we talking fried tranny ? Can you see where the oil came out ? Sorry to hear about this type of problem.

Must be an automatic. Sounds like rebuild time. You need to make sure that both lines to the transmission cooler are not clogged. Also, pull the pan and look for fragments in the pan.

Yes its an Auto, I can't tell where the oil is coming from. I did have a line the runs by my raditor that was unconnected and leaking but it looked like oil and the fluid that was all over my engine looked like tranny fluid.

Salinaz-

You may have blown the connection to the transmission cooler on the lower part of the radiator. However, you still need to pull the tranny pan to see if the blown line was cause or effect. Can you get under it to pull the tranny pan? If you blew the connection and kept driving, you may have fried the uncooled tranny.

if the oil cooling line from tranny popped off the radiator, then it will dump oil everywhere and get on the headers and burn and make a stink. Pull pan and check that no major bits are in it, some old clutch material and stuff is ok.

Clean all, reassemble, put line back on, fill with goo, should go again.

Question is - was line old and just gave way?

well...runing it without goo might have done it in. You might take the pan off and see what's in there. Or run over to a tranny shop, its not incredibly user serviceable. The goo not only provides the hydraulic coupling between the torque converter and the engine, but also powers the fluidic logic of the valve body so that it selects gears.

When you say jumps, do you mean it hops a bit, or jumps once when switching into gear? I also take it engine revs make no difference. You also tried all positions, such as low and drive and reverse?

If the torque converter has no goo - it won't move - but likewise - if the goo doesn't engage the clutches - it won't move either.

Is goo up to correct level? Sometimes you have to row it through the gears to get the goo in the converter and then go back and add more.

all I can say is if it doesn't work, and linkage is not messed up, and the goo level is right - you could open the pan and see what's in there - but even then - dunno what you would do next.

If the filter is clogged you could replace it - but still - if it was clogged - could be from metal - making and much bigger issues.

You could try a junque yard tranny replacement.

What year, and which transmission? It sounds like you've burned up some clutches with the fluid loss, and it's rebuild time. If it's a turbo 350, they're not too expensive to build, and there's a lot of them out there if you choose a salvage yard tranny. If you do, drop the pan and change the filter and fluid, and also replace the front and rear seals before installing the transmission.

well, you have to row it through the gear selector and make sure the oil is the right level in the tranny or you'll blow a seal or it won't move. Check the dipstick in the tranny with the thing running but not in gear. Once at level, try fwd/bckwd, then check level again - you have to get goo in all the valve bodies.

Glad to hear that there was no major problem!

These trannys do take a lot of fluid to fill up...

just watch the level, and I think you are ok. TH350s are pretty tough customers.

As long as you didnt have to put in more than 12 quarts your good. TH/350's generally need about 10-11 quarts (i think) when completely empty, including empty convertor. If tranny were to die in the future, it shouldn't be too hard to pull out.

If you've got room without overfilling, add a pint of "Trans-Medic", or some other brand of seal conditioner. That stuff softens the rubber in the seals, and makes them seal better. Just don't overdo it, more is definitely not better in this case. If one bottle doesn't help, adding another one will make things worse!
